The
format called DjVu (pronounced deja-vu) is designed primarily to store
scanned images. It is characterized by incorporating advanced
technologies enabling high-quality images to be stored in a minimum of
space.
DjVu is an open standard, in fact, the format
specifications, as well as the sources of the encoder, are available to
users. It uses compression in its separation of layers of images,
progressive loading, arithmetic coding and compression without loss to
imagery bitonal (two colors).
DjVu compression typically
reaches about relations between 5 and 10 times smaller than the JPEG
and GIF formats for documents in color, and between 3 and 8 times the
TIFF format for documents in black and white.
It is ideal for the
Web because of its progressive nature, this means that displays an
image just starts downloading and uploading measure that is the visual
quality of the image will improve. It is presented as an alternative to
PDF, and now exceeds this format in most of the scanned documents.
